Black people are generally very religious. They register high numbers in churches. This can also be drawn from the high number of Black celebrities who thank God whenever they win awards, acknowledging that God has a hand in their success. This is why atheism isn’t so much linked to the Black community.

In reality, however, there are many atheists and non-believer Blacks, including high profile celebrities. Below is a list of some of them:

Samuel L. Jackson – He’s among the most famous and top rated Black actors of all time. Jackson is one actor who believes his talent isn’t God-given because, as he puts it, “I work at it. I still learn, I read.”

Chris Rock – He ranks among the world’s greatest comedians of all time. Although Rock comes from a Christian family background, he’s recently become anti-religious. The comedian has even gone to the extent of equating religion to some form of slavery, saying, “A black Christian is like a black person with no memory.”

Morgan Freeman – He’s an iconic figure in the movies world. Although he doesn’t believe in God, Freeman has played God in a couple of movies. During an interview, the interviewer assumed that Freeman was a believer, prompting him to respond, saying, “When did I say I was a ‘man of god’? …[I am a man of] faith! There’s a big difference… We take a lot of what we’re talking about in science on faith.” He believes in the power of belief, but not in some supernatural power.

Tyler The Creator – This is one celebrity who’s got some Christian background yet he currently doesn’t want any links with any religion. He hates religion, going as far as saying religion “keeps people in a box and won’t allow them to do what the f*ck they want.” And about Jesus, he says, “That n*gga ain’t real!”

Robin Quivers – She’s unequivocally said she “doesn’t believe there’s a god.” The fact that she’s stayed on the Howard Stern show for so long is a clear indication that she’s not guided by Christian morals.

John Legend – Although he’s got some Christian background, the singer has lost touch with it. He started by questioning why God has left people to suffer. And it appears he’s completely drifted away from his Christian background. He says, “You know I have my issues with faith nowadays. I grew up in a religious home, but I’m not religious right now. But I’m trying to get back in touch with the things that were good about the faith that I grew up with.”

Donald Glover – This rapper cum comedian was brought up a Jehovah’s Witness, but later relinquished his faith because he was feeling weird about it as a child. He refers to himself an “airport atheist,” saying he’d only pray if he’s on a plane and there is turbulence.

Neil deGrasse Tyson – He’s an astrophysicist and science communicator. Although he’s believed to be an atheist by some, he’s actually an agnostic. Tyson, being so much into the study of the universe, doesn’t believe the universe could be under the rule of a loving and caring God. He says, “Every account of a higher power that I’ve seen described, of all religions that I’ve seen, include many statements with regard to the benevolence of that power. When I look at the universe and all the ways the universe wants to kill us, I find it hard to reconcile that with statements of beneficence.”  He also says many religious predictions, based on religious documents, have failed, further driving him away from the belief in God.
